Artists Interview Artists: Deborah Fisher

Deborah Fisher, a Brooklyn, NY based artist, participates in the Artists Interview Artists Project. Below Deborah responds to another artist's five questions (Corey Amaro from the south of France). In order to participate, Deborah had to provide me with five questions for some other artist to answer. The assigning of questions to artists is completely random. 1. What feeling do you least celebrate in your art?

Passivity. My work is fundamentally about force, motion, cause and effect.

2. I f you could add one thing to nature by your art what would it be?

I don't think I'd add a thing. I take a lot from nature.

3. What is your muse?

Loss of control. A sculpture is what remains after a series of impossible propositions (defy gravity, get big even though you're insubstantial, hold yourself together) is negotiated. I can only make the proposition and deal with the result. As a sculptor I have confidence that often escapes me in regular life, because I use methods that I have little control over. No expectations means total freedom. I like that aspect of my work. I should remember that principle in the rest of my life, haha.

4. If wind blew into your heart what would it stir?

That makes me think there would be a large hole in my chest... if so, panic.

5. How does art live in your life?

I do try not to have any control, to let things happen without getting in the way too much. But of course I am not very good at it, I am always trying to strive less.
