Solo Show is Getting There
I'm just 9 days away from installing my first solo show and I'm pretty pleased with where I am right now. Hopefully this won't bore you too much, but here's the current status of the 21 pieces that will hopefully be shown:
Completed Pieces
Crossroads
Bulge
Totem
Undulate
Basin
Peninsula
Valley
Swithcback I
Switchback II
Misplaced
(R)evolve
Plateau
Merge
Expanse
Shadow
Awaiting Hanging Mechanism
Bulbous
Catawampus
Awaiting Lacquer and Hanging Mechanism
Horseshoe
Homage
Awaiting Drilling, Sanding and Hanging Mechanism
Big Cedar - This isn't the real title... just a placeholder
Awaiting Design, Drilling, Sanding and Hanging Mechanism (yikes!)
Ash - Again, not the real title
So, I feel good about where I am right now. However, none of this takes into account the other things that go into putting on a show. The space where I'll be showing is a bit unusual and the wall treatments there don't do wood the best service. To combat that I've decided to mount sheets of white paper to the wall that are slightly larger than my pieces. These will serve as mats and hopefully allow the wood to pop from the wall. Did I mention the wall is a pinkish taupe color with texture? I think the white paper will look clean and provide for the best display of my work. Of course, I have yet to cut the paper for any of my pieces yet and that will be an interesting adventure.
The prices for the work are set and the price list is almost done. Also, other forms of signage are about complete as well.
No nervousness has set in yet but I am anxious to get the work on the wall. One thing I'm ready for... my right arm has gotten quite buff from all of the sanding and drilling I've been doing lately. I need to do something to let my left arm catch up... he's getting jealous of the other! Ha!

Dear J.T.,
Try working in a traditional dark room and see what that does for your eyes!
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
Reston, Virginia, a planned community conceived by artist and philosopher, Robert E. Simon, is the only designated graffiti free zone in Northern Virginia. While fully supportive of the visual arts, graffiti artists and taggers are respectfully asked to refrain from engaging in acts of public vandalism while in Reston. You are, however, encouraged to spray paint, tag and stencil your hearts out in Loudoun County – we Restonians recognize that our culturally deprived brothers and sisters in Loudoun County desperately need all the visual arts they can get. We would also greatly appreciate it if you would not attempt to lower any of the corporate flags stationed outside of the offices of defense contractors in Reston. While most of us in Reston are liberal anti-war Democrats, and indeed probably sympathize with the more liberal elements of a potential visual arts audience, we would again respectfully request that you confine your anti-war protestor activities while in our community to screaming back at Rush Limbaugh on your car radio with all car windows in their up position. Our goal is for you to have a fun, safe and non-confrontational visit while in Reston.
Sincerely,
James W. Bailey
Chief Commissar
Reston Ministry of Culture and Arts
