Bryan Whitson: Scene
Artist Bryan Whitson of Washington, DC, continues my recent project by writing about "scene." As usual, I extend an invitation to all local artists who would like to participate in this effort. Just email me!
Bryan Whitson: Scene
It's interesting that you chose that word. I think of a lot of my work in terms of scenes or stills from films. They have a feeling of being parts of a narrative, though not a specific one. I want the moments I
photograph to be vaguely familiar in this way so the viewer will put themselves into the scene and try to relate to it. Literally speaking about the scenes depicted in my work, I try to create a sense of space
and place that evokes solitude and contemplation. So the word scene for me as it relates to my work is about two things; conceptually narrative and formally a sense of space. Watch "Wings of Desire" by Wim Wenders. It's one of the most beautiful movies ever made and a huge influence on the way I work. Every time I see it I realize I'm totally ripping it off.
